Save Money with a Wind Mitigation

Save Lives + Preserve Property = Savings on the Windstorm Portion of your Homeowners Policy

 

 2011 Florida Statutes 627.711 and 627.0629 in part, says insurance companies provide savings to consumers who implement windstorm damage mitigation techniques, alterations or solutions to their residential properties.
 
  • Wind Mitigation Discounts are evaluated through a Wind Mitigation Inspection
  • Many homes already meet the minimum Florida Building Code requirements

 The nine areas of inspection are:

1)    Which building code, 2) predominant roof covering, 3) roof deck attachment, 4) roof to wall attachment, 5) roof geometry, 6) gable end bracing, 7) wall construction type, 8) secondary water resistance, and 9) opening protection

Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 1/12) is the state required report and must have photo documentation.

  • Mitigation Inspections must be Certified by a Qualified Inspector who holds an active license or certificate
  • Authorized mitigation inspectors are :

Building code inspector certified, Section 468.607, FL Statutes

General/ building/or residential contractor licensed, Section 489.111,

FL Statues

Professional architect licensed, Section 481.213, FL Statues

Professional engineer licensed, Section 471.015, FL Statutes

Home inspector licensed under Section 468.8314 and has completed at least 3 hours of mitigation training ….

Other individual or entity recognized by the insurer with necessary qualifications, pursuant to Section 627.711(2)(f), FL Statutes

  • Inspectors need access to attic or crawl space for roof deck and roof to wall attachment, an important aspect of the inspection
  • The Verification Form. OIR-B1-1802(Rev.01/12)is valid up to five years provided no material changes have been made to the structure
  • Does not apply to mobile homes
  • Owner pays for inspection and should receive a copy of the report and photos
  • Owners do not have to wait for the renewal of their policy to benefit from the savings
  • Use an inspector who is experienced and knowledgeable to conduct this type of inspection, are licensed or certified with The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and have current liability insurance coverage
